checked out

So here's the thing; I have never in my life been inclined to wear plaid/flannel in any way. I think I associate plaid with kilts and tablecloths in Italian restaurants. But for some reason this season when I started to see fall lookbooks for my favorite stores I didn't find myself passing the pages featuring plaid with my usual haste. I suddenly found myself enjoying the mixing with florals, the long flowing bottoms and the cutout dresses. But of course I paired it with black, black and some more black. So what does a college girl do when she wants to try a trend but doesn't own it herself? Borrow from her trusty roommate, of course! Shout out to Maddy for the loan, and scroll down past the photos to see some of the inspiration for this look.

west of claremont

I've been waiting for this moment for forever. The other day I finally stepped outside and felt it. Autumn. I knew it was coming: Starbucks put out Pumpkin Spice Lattes and the fall equinox passed us by, but I was waiting for that subtle confirmation that I couldn't get from a practical source. Now of course, this time of year is transitional in fashion and begs the questions, what the hell do I wear in between seasons? My solution? Light layering. For those of you who get chilled easily, this may be too light but you get the idea. Sweaters and shorts, dresses and cardigans and warming up your color palette all sound like perfection to me.

By the way we've reached the conclusion that Ava is an insane photographer, yes? Thought so!

ivory walls

E.B. White once wrote, "New York blends the gift of privacy with the excitement of participation." If you've never read his essay Here Is New York you should probably read it, A because two of my professors have already assigned it within the first month of classes and B because it's a really well-written description of the city and what it's like to live here. Saturday was practically begging me to wander the streets near Union Square, of course make a pit stop at Free People (where I found this top for 50% off- SCORE!!) and spend some time people-watching. It was the perfect combination of privacy and participation. And it was so New York.

simply put

I blog with my iPhone. I use the camera app, auto-enhance, and e-mail the photos to myself. Why do I do this? I know nothing about technology. It's literally a miracle that this site is up and running. But when you have a fashion friend with a camera like Ava the high quality of DSL it's too pretty to resist. This NYFW-inspired outfit was all about the silhouette. For some reason whenever I try to dress myself it usually goes back to black so instead of fighting it I went for clean, crisp and polished. And threw on the silver boots to mess it up a bit. Cause you always gotta mess it up a bit.

because of la ferla

For those of you who check in with me every now and then, you may recall that a few weeks ago I did a post called "Greater Than Art"where I tried to call attention to one of the biggest issues people have with Fashion Week. In essence, Ruth La Ferla wrote an article last year about bloggers who got all decked out and paraded around the tents in something certainly attention-grabbing though not necessarily fashion-forward in an attempt to be photographed by maybe the right person. Basically she was calling out the wannabes. And yes, I did go down the tents, gawk at some of the shoes, overhear  BryanBoy scream out the brands he was wearing to people who were two feet away from him, and take a few photos myself. But I did it in jeans, a t-shirt and my trusty black boots (details in previous post) and I'm 100% okay with that. In my purist mentality, Fashion Week is about a collection of the world's most enthusiastic and talented minds of the industry coming to the same city for a few days and you can judge me, but I couldn't resist that idea.

Meet my roommate Maddy! Is she not killing it in her (okay it's mine lol) acid wash denim jacket?

THOSE SPIKES.

Back to back wedge action

Met up with some fellow bloggers. Here's Aimee Song from songofstyle.com

and Rachel Lynch of ihateblonde.com

And on a different note, here are some pics from the Passion Pit concert from Saturday night. Imagine a stage on the edge of the city with a beautiful sunset and a perfect view of FiDi and that sums up my night. I totally would have taken more photos had a wave of blackness not taken the remaining strands sun away before I could even blink.

These guys seriously killed it live. Michael Angelakos has a sick voice.

dark lips

There's a color that I always pull out when it comes time to start to transition into fall. Amidst the burnt oranges and the earth tones I always fall head over heels for burgundy/oxblood/bordeaux or whatever they're calling it this season. But I decided to go for a subtle transition and mimic the color in the detail of this insane H&M jacket on my lips. Seriously though guys, H&M is killing it this fall. Hit that up for your autumn indulges at classically awesome H&M prices.
